hotel history
KNOWN AS THE "OLD LEVEE BOARD BUILDING", HOTEL 27'S PROPERTY WAS ORIGINALLY COMPRISED OF TWO FREE-STANDING STRUCTURES: A BANK ON THE CORNER OF WALNUT AND MAIN WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1880, AND THE LEVEE BOARD BUILDING, LOCATED APPROXIMATELY FIFTY FEET TO THE SOUTH, WAS ERECTED IN 1883. THE LEVEE BOARD ACQUIRED THE BANK BUILDING IN 1919. THE TWO SERVED AS THE LEVEE BOARD’S OFFICES FOR OVER 100 YEARS.
On April 21, 1927, the Mississippi River’s Mainline Levee broke north of Greenville, inundating the city and flooding an area as wide as 60 miles to the east and as far south as 90 miles. As the offices of the Mississippi Levee Board, THE BUILDINGS PLAYED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE RECOVERY EFFORTS OF THE GREAT FLOod. THE ORIGINAL LEVEE BOARD BUILDING WHICH currently HOUSES THE HOTEL LOBBY, BREAKFAST ROOM, AND MULBERRY MEETING SPACE hosted meetings between President Herbert Hoover (then Secretary of Commerce) and local officials leading the area’s flood recovery efforts. The flood of 1927 resulted in the passage of the Jones-Reid Bill of 1928 which set into motion a great national project for the improvement of the Mississippi River flood control and navigation. The ensuing work produced in the Walnut Street offices of the Mississippi Levee Board protected citizens from the river until the offices moved to a new location in 1996. IN 1997, THE PROPERTY WAS CONVERTED INTO A HOTEL. A THIRD BUILDING HOUSING THE BULK OF THE HOTEL ROOMS WAS ERECTED CREATING A COURTYARD BETWEEN THE TWO ORIGINAL BUILDINGS. for 138 years, THE MISSISSIPPI LEVEE BOARD OWNED THE PROPERTY UNTIL THEY SOLD IT in 2021 TO GREATER GREENVILLE DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION, THE PARENT COMPANY OF MAIN STREET GREENVILLE. paying homage to The role the buildings played in the area’s most infamous flood, Main Street Greenville changed the name of the property to Hotel 27. Today, the property serves as Greenville’s only historic and Boutique Hotel welcoming guests to experience a little bit of history in each stay. |
